A lot of the time, we see Christians who are call themselves complete followers of Christ. We may even call ourselves that. But are we?
If you had to rate yourself on this scale, from “on fire” for God to “cold” (as far away from God as one could possibly go), where would you rate yourself?
A lot of people would rate themselves at “toasty” or “lukewarm.” After all, there’s no perfect Christian, right?! After all, God is a God of mercy.
Actually, God has a problem with us being “lukewarm” or “toasty.”
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
– Revelation 3:15 – 16.
What really hit me about this verse is, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.” That scares me. We can lie to ourselves, to others, to pastors, counselors, close friends — but we can’t lie to God. We can try. We can go to church…read our Bibles…go to youth group…be Sunday school teachers — but it all means nothing to God if we aren’t wholly dedicated to Him. If we aren’t on fire for God, we are just as far from Him as someone who’s cold is.
That’s scary. I may be trying to have a great relationship with God, but unless I am honouring Him in everything I do and am completely dedicated to Him, He will turn His back on me.
So what are we to do? Deuteronomy 10:12 – 13 tells us this:
“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?”
And Micah 6:8 is another common verse: “He has shown you, Oh mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
God is waiting to cover us with His love and blessings if we honour, acknowledge, and serve Him with not only our heads, but our hearts and souls as well.
Will you answer the call?
